Here’s a step-by-step guide for the ultimate holiday baking project – making gingerbread from scratch! Use this recipe to make cookie people, cute shapes, or pieces for a gingerbread house. Give the kids free reign when it’s time to decorate and if it gets messy remember: The joy is in the process.
Just don’t let them run away!
Makes 18 triangles
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 -12 minutes
Cooling/Decorating Time: 1 hour
Total time: 1 hour 30 minutes
- 1 stick butter
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 cups flour
- 2 tbsp water (added slowly)
- 2 cups royal icing, divided
- Food coloring
- Sprinkles, other decorations
- In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter, molasses, brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon, and baking soda on high until smooth.
- Add flour gradually and mix on low until blended.
- Add water slowly until dough is stiff but pliable.
- Roll dough out to ¼ inch thickness between 2 sheets of parchment paper.
- Use cutters to cut out shapes, and use a spatula to lay on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Don’t over bake!
- Meanwhile, fill small bowls with royal icing and use a few drops of food coloring to make desired colors in each bowl. Spoon single colors into pastry bags or squirt bottles.
- When cookies are completely cool, decorate with icing and sprinkles or any other decorations you like.
Making royal icing from scratch can be tricky! If you’re working with kids under 5, I suggest buying it pre-made so you can focus on the fun part – decorating!
