Remember Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Eve” and all the crazy hijinks the sprites and fairies and humans got in to on that one crazy night? That’s the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It’s a day to celebrate the rebirth of the sun and the end of our winter hibernation. So, on June 20th, the day before summer officially begins, get outside, loosen the reigns on bedtime, eat every meal al fresco, and embrace this whimsy of the day.

TAKE A DEEP DIVE

Make a Nature Mandala

[su_spacer size=”60″][/su_spacer]

[su_spacer size=”60″][/su_spacer]
The mandala is a circular symbol that represents the universe. Its concentric circles represent the way the universe and nature and humans interact. It’s a great way to teach kids that we have to take care of the earth as much as it takes care of us.

Supplies
  1. Sidewalk chalk
  2. Flower petals (from your Bee Garden!)

[su_spacer size=”40″][/su_spacer]
[su_row][su_column size=”1/4″][/su_column] [su_column size=”3/4″]
Draw a circle as large as you’d like your mandala to be, choosing a color that you have the most flower petals for. (Hint, green is a good one because you can use stems and leaves or even grass to fill in the circle).[/su_column] [/su_row]
[su_row][su_column size=”1/4″] [/su_column] [su_column size=”3/4″]Draw circles in alternating colors within the first circle so that it resembles a bull’s eye. You can also draw circles out from the center so that it looks like a large flower.[/su_column] [/su_row]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/4″][/su_column] [su_column size=”3/4″]Line each colored circle with matching flower petals. For example, in your yellow circle place sunflowers or lilies or dandelions. In your purple circle place iris or violets. You could also make a brown circle and cover it with bark or dirt. There are no rules except that you use material from the earth![/su_column] [/su_row]

[su_row][su_column size=”1/4″][/su_column] [su_column size=”3/4″]Step back and take a look at the kaleidoscope of colors nature has given you to make your mandala. And snap a picture because like nature, it has its season and it will pass. [/su_column] [/su_row]
