A chat with NYU sociologist Niobe Way on fostering male friendships. Countless studies have shown that friendships are critical to the mental health of teenage boys. There is a direct correlation between how much boys share their feelings and rates of depression... "Men, boys, girls, and women have extraordinary capacities to connect, have quality relationships, care for each other, have glorious marriages and friendships, and yet we live in a culture that disconnects us from that core capacity," stresses Way. "We're social animals. And then we raise our kids to inhibit their socialness." Let's reverse that.
